Preparing for an Earthquake or Other Disaster

There is so much you can do to get yourself, your family and your business better prepared for an emergency.  In our area, a big earthquake is eventually inevitable.

We hold periodic free workshops which are designed to help you get ready for an earthquake or other disaster.  First you need to know how to survive it and then we'll tell you what supplies you'll need - food, water, shelter, tools and storage in a safe, accessible place.

Dave Lewis, retired fire chief with the Oakland Fire Department and emergency preparedness expert, talks for about 45 minutes and then answers questions. John Zanzi, chief of the Sebastopol Fire Department, will also talk about CERT - (Community Emergency Response Team) which educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

We give out copies of our Red-Cross endorsed 16-week disaster prep plan and an excellent booklet put out by the State of California called "Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country".

We also serve samples of Mountain House freeze dried food so you can taste how good emergency food can be.

We would be happy to set up a workshop for groups interested.  Contact Mike Bishop at the store at 823-7688.

Ask at the store for copies of the above publications or

Pictured above is our Disaster prep kit!  It includes Propane Stove, Propane Fuel
Flatware Sets - 3pc (2), Cookware Camp Set, Matches, Water purification tablets
Can opener, Flashlight, Alkaline batteries (2 sets of 2), Light sticks (2) First Aid Kit - 48 piece, Toilet paper, Gas wrench, Dust masks (5 pack), Heavy work gloves,
Knife/Multitool, Tarp - 8’ x 10’, Duck tape, Emergency blankets (2), and a whistle all in a sturdy bucket with lid.

We recommend you get another bucket or a refuse can and fill it with food - Mountain House food has a 7 year shelf life. You may also want to stash some cash in your bucket and add a crank-powered radio/light. You’ll also need a source of water.
Make sure to put the gas wrench by your gas valve right away.

We also have a small model to keep in your car.
